Assistance – Architectural Design

Assisting with the design phase of the project allows us to provide solutions for cost-optimization in achieving the Passive House standard.

Requirements for Delivery:
We request the design documentation in a standard vector format (.dwg files). Drawings should include site plans, floor plans, sections, and elevations, with geographical coordinates and accurate cardinal orientation.

Deliverable:
Written feedback review of the architectural design in terms of orientation, form factor, thermal envelope, openings (type, location), technical spaces for mechanical ventilation, etc.


Assistance – Mechanical Ventilation

Based on project requirements and building modeling, we will provide you with a list of suitable mechanical ventilation systems for you to price out and choose from. Once the supplier/manufacturer has supplied a preliminary layout, we will review it and advice on how to optimize it.

Requirements for Delivery:
Preliminary layout of the ventilation system as provided by the manufacturer/supplier.

Deliverable:
Written feedback review of the mechanical ventilation design.


Assembly and Junction Detail Design

Detail design, including thermal + moisture analysis and construction documentation of assemblies and junctions, will be provided for the main components of the thermal envelope of the project.

Requirements for Delivery:
This analysis requires that we receive detailed information about the insulation materials selected by the client among the range of suitable ones, including testing results of thermal performance (R/in value or λ value) and density of the insulation once installed in the assembly on site.

Deliverable:
Documentation of assemblies and junctions including air and wind tightness. Detailed performance values including heat flow (U values/ R values for assemblies, PSI values for junctions) and temperature factors (fRsi values). Calculations are carried out according to international standards. All calculation results are provided in the international metrics system, with a summary showing the results in the inch-pound system.


Analysis + Documentation – Windows and Doors

Based on local climate and project requirements, we will provide you with a list of suitable windows and doors for you to price out and choose from. Once the the selection is made, we’ll provide analysis results and installation details

Requirements for Delivery:
Provide us with the final window/door schedule and installation position.

Deliverable:
Detailed documentation is provided for installation, air tightness and flashing. PH Comfort Criterion is verified for each window/door depending on local climate. All calculations are carried out according to international standards. All calculation results are provided in the international metrics system, with a summary showing the results in the inch-pound system.


Passive House Energy Balance – Whole Building

The Energy Balance is calculated according to the International standard, in terms of energy demand for heating and cooling, primary energy, as well as peak heating load.

Requirements for Delivery:
The final architectural design in .dwg format, including floor plans, sections, and elevations; a site plan including the footprint of the building with accurate orientation; and sufficient photographs of the site surroundings (with indication on the floor of where the photos were taken).

Deliverable:
The energy balance is calculated with PHPP. Climate data used is issued by PHI, and is not included in this quote (may be already available at no charge). All calculation results are provided in the international metrics system, with a summary showing the results in the inch-pound system.


Assistance – Construction Phase

This section describes meetings between Emu and the builder/client throughout the construction phase, and according to the predefined schedule below of critical milestones.

Requirements for Delivery:
A crew leader for each company involved in the specific phase is required to be present during the meetings. All meetings need to be agreed upon and scheduled with a minimum of 10 work days notice, depending on availability of all parties. Availability of suitable data service for the video call to take place needs to be verified by the client before the meeting (time used to address technical difficulties is counted as part of the meeting).

Deliverable:
For each phase listed below, one virtual meeting of up to one hour is recommended, with review of requirements and strategies to be followed to achieve planned quality and performance. Critical milestones for the construction process of the Project have been identified as follows:

1 – Framing Setup
2 – Insulation Installation
3 – Air Tightness Installation
4 – Window/Door Installation
5 – HRV/ERV Installation
6 – Preliminary Blower Door Test
7 – Final Blower Door Test + Certification Documentation Sent

For each meeting, a report is issued in the form of a written document. Additional duration or additional meetings can be provided at a fee.


Assistance – PHI Certification

We will act as reference entity for the PHI Certifier throughout the process, including collection, organization and submittal of documentation required by PHI Certifier for the certification of the project.

Requirements for Delivery:
Final architectural/mechanical drawings describing the building envelope according to PHI requirements as PDF file (a sample will be provided for guidance). If needed, conversions of project data from IP to metrics will be provided by Emu to PHI. Thorough photo documentation is required from the client for the certification process. Emu reserves the right to use such photos as teaching or publication material, at no additional fee, with proper accreditation and privacy for the author.

Deliverable:
Review of the documentation before submittal to PHI.


Data Monitoring – Moisture + Durability

This is the core data monitoring package of Emu’s Pilot Project. It includes:

  • one sensor equipped to monitor building’s internal conditions (temperature and relative humidity)
  • one sensor equipped to monitor building’s external conditions (temperature and relative humidity)
  • four sensors equipped to monitor conditions inside the wall sheathing (temperature and relative humidity) for four locations, as defined by Emu
  • one sensor equipped to monitor air flow rate of the vented cavity
  • one hour of remote installation support with SMT over the phone
  • six months rental of cellular data modem for data collection during construction
  • one year of automatic data collection from the sensors (requires power and home wifi connection, which are not included)
  • one year of collection of data from nearby weather station
  • one-off on-site measurement of construction moisture (for fine-tuning of hygrothermal simulation model)
  • hygrothermal simulation of the wall assembly, according to standard conditions (ASHRAE 160 and ASHRAE RP 1325), as well as as-built conditions (actual built-in moisture, weather data of current year).
  • project case study including comparison of simulation results and monitored data.
